The Challenge
The University of Cambridge may be one of the world’s oldest seats of learning, but it is internationally acknowledged as an innovator in providing Information Technology services. The University has provided its academic population with both wired and wireless high speed Internet connectivity for many years.

In 2014, the University took the next step. The city of Cambridge had been selected as the departure point for Stage 3 of the Tour de France, and the administrators decided to provide outdoor Wi-Fi for the students, the media, the Tour de France officials and the general public. Access would be free, and it would continue to be available after the event.

Many of the access points would have to be located well away from any University buildings. Fiber optic cable could cover the distances involved and provide connectivity for the numerous Wi-Fi access points. But the access points would typically be mounted on top of lamp posts. There would be no easy access to power outlets. So the access points would not only need fiber to copper media conversion; they would need power sources as well.

The Solution
Fibre Technologies, a B+B SmartWorx technology partner, was brought in to consult on the media conversion and powering options for the Wi-Fi access points. They recommended using the B+B SmartWorx PoE+ Giga-MiniMc, as the PoE+ Giga-MiniMc combines fiber to copper media conversion and Power over Ethernet (PoE) in a single, compact unit with extended temperature specifications.

The Product: PoE and PoE+Giga-MiniMc
The PoE and PoE+Giga-MiniMc is a low-cost, compact, media converter that supports both PoE and PoE+ standards. It is a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) device. This means that it can power a Powered Device (PD) while delivering data at the same time. PoE+ capability means that the PoE and PoE+Giga-MiniMc can support high-power devices like pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) IP surveillance cameras that require more power than the 15.4 W provided by standard PoE devices. The PoE and PoE+Giga-MiniMc is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.3af/at standards, making them easy to integrate into your network.

The PoE and PoE+ Giga-MiniMc provides a 10/100/1000Base-T copper UTP port and an SFP uplink port that supports either a copper or fiber SFP. Enhanced features include store-and-forward, Autocross, an LFPT DIP switch, and PoE reset on loss of fiber signal. (PoE reset is an advanced function that, when enabled, will force the PSE output power to reset when the LINK state is lost on the SFP port.)
